There's a very warm welcome awaiting you at The Shepley Spitfire on Mickley Lane, at Totley, as this popular local pub celebrates 30 years in business.
New landlady, Joanne Bond, is as welcoming as the stylish refurbishment since the pub was taken over by Greeneking Pubs.
The pub was newly built in 1979 and named after Douglas Shepley, a local man, who was killed during the Second World War when his Spitfire fighter plane was shot down over the Isle of Wight.
The land the pub is on, which is just half a mile from the Shepley family home at Woodthorpe Hall, was bought by the Hardy & Hanson Company, who asked the local community to come up with a name, and hence the Shepley Spitfire was born.
It is quite a story and the links to the past are something that Joanne is keen to maintain. The pub is the place to be whether it be having a family meal, or meeting with a group of friends for the Tuesday night quiz. There's something to attract everyone with a range of cask ale for beer lovers, including a local one always on tap.
As well as the main menu, there is a lunchtime meal deal consisting of a sandwich, chips and soft drink for £5.45 (available Monday to Saturday 11.00 am to 3.00 pm) and a daily two meals for £9.00 available at any time.
Sunday's between 12.00 pm and 5.00 pm there is a fabulous choice from the carvery.
The pub is a real family friendly venue - this summer the children's play area is to receive a make-over too.
