Steve hails from the "Deep South" the deep south of Yorkshire that is, born in Sheffield which has seen the rise of some of the most popular acts in recent decades such as Jarvis Cocker, The Human League and Arctic Monkeys to name but a few. Steves musical influences have been wide and varied from Rock and Roll to Country, Gospel and Rhythm and Blues to Standards. Some of the artists to influence him have been the Blues giants like Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters along with Country greats like Johnny Cash and Merie Haggard, then more recently Tom Jones, George Michael, Chris Isaak, Morrisey and onto Soul greats like Marvin Gaye, Al Green and James Brown.
Steve says "I've listened to almost all types of music and my earliest memories were listening to Al Jolson who was a favourite of my Dad to Englebert and Tom Jones who are my Mums favourites.
His main influence is very clear however, The artist of the 20th Century the late great Elvis Presley.The influence Elvis has had has been immeasurable and it’s very clear when you hear Steve’s singing style that the great man lives on,
“Ive been influenced by Elvis since I was a little kid and now the voice I hear coming out of my mouth is the sound of Elvis, I cant sing like anyone else, its my natural voice” said Steve on a recent BBC radio interview.
The ELVIS Experience is a two hour tribute show to the King drawing on songs from the Rock n roll era through the films of the 1960s, the 1968 TV Special and of course the Las Vegas shows of the 1970s.
The name Van der Valk is an inherited one from his time spent in Holland where Steve has worked extensively with a Band as lead singer, touring around Holland, Germany and Sweden.
“Its time to come back home to my roots and establish myself as a solo artist now” says Steve so he’s back on the Club and Pub circuit in the UK.
