Lead singer Gav Anderson has been playing and writing music since he was first introduced to the piano at the age of eight. He got his first guitar from the big man himself (that’s Mr Claus, not Jesus) in the Christmas of 1993. Indie folk band The Theories later formed when friends Gav Anderson and bass player Tash (in search of culture and complimentary wine) found themselves at a Sheffield art gallery in 2006. Knowing little of Impressionist Art and consuming more than their fair share of free Cava; a drunken conversation ensued, during which they uncovered a mutual appreciation for Sheffield music, indie rock, folk, punk and metal. A cynical person might say that both the art gallery excursion and the decision to form a band were just new ways to meet girls but luckily for the Sheffield music scene the boys had the talent and determination to launch their musical quest despite their questionable motives. Together Gav Anderson, Tash and drummer Sam Pugh formed The Theories.

The band is influenced by a variety of styles and artists but in the interest of conforming to the ‘genre generation’, they would be best described as indie folk. Their music is uplifting, toe tapping and in the words of Tash “fast-as-f***”.

The Theories released their debut album; Crazy Road Trip in December 2010 and are currently gigging regularly at pubs, clubs and festivals in the North of England. All three band members first came to Sheffield to study and such was the lure of this great city, have never left. The variety and energy of the Sheffield music scene continues to inspire The Theories who are working on new material but still not getting any action.
